Your child breathes a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nosepiece, feels pleasantly relaxed and slightly floaty, and stays awake and able to respond to us the whole time. It works quickly and wears off quickly once we switch to plain oxygen at the end of the visit. Oral sedation involves a medication taken by mouth before treatment begins. It produces a deeper level of relaxation — many children become drowsy and remember little of the appointment — and is a better fit when anxiety is significant or when more dental work needs to be completed in a single sitting. We often pair oral sedation with nitrous oxide and always with local anesthesia so the area being treated is fully numb.
Who Sedation Helps, and How We Decide

When sedation does make sense, we review your child's medical history, current medications, height and weight, and past dental experiences before recommending an approach. Because we are an exclusively pediatric practice with a board-certified pediatric dentist on staff and a general dentist as well, these conversations happen with people who work with children every day. Recovery depends on the method. After nitrous oxide, most children feel completely normal within minutes and can return to school or their usual activities. After oral sedation, expect a sleepy, wobbly child for the rest of the day. Plan on a quiet afternoon at home, keep your child within sight, start with clear liquids and soft foods, and avoid bikes, trampolines, and stairs without help. We accept all major PPO insurance plans, Medicaid, and self-pay patients, and we file claims as a specialist practice for our pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, and dental anesthesiology services. HSA and FSA funds are accepted, and flexible financing plans are available if you would rather spread the cost of treatment out.
