Whatever brought you here, a dental exam is the appointment that answers the question every parent has: *is everything okay in there?* We see children, adolescents, and teens across Easley, Greenville, and Anderson, and a thorough exam is where nearly every good outcome in pediatric dentistry begins.
A dental exam is a careful, hands-on evaluation of your child's teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues. We look at each tooth surface for early signs of decay, check how the upper and lower teeth fit together, watch how permanent teeth are erupting behind or beneath the baby teeth, and examine the tongue, cheeks, and palate. For infants and toddlers, much of the exam is about the basics: counting teeth, checking for early childhood decay along the gumline, and talking with you about bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, and how to brush a squirmy one-year-old.
We recommend a first exam around the arrival of the first tooth or the first birthday, and regular exams from there through young adulthood. Because we are an exclusively pediatric practice with a board-certified pediatric dentist on staff, every part of the visit is built for kids — the pacing, the language we use, and the time we take. We also welcome children with special healthcare needs, and parents are welcome in the treatment room, which makes a real difference for a child who does better with a familiar hand to hold.
Exams work best alongside the rest of preventive care, so most visits include a dental cleaning with our hygienist and, when appropriate, fluoride treatment or dental sealants to protect the deep grooves of molars. Cavity detection is a central part of the exam; catching decay while it is small usually means a simple filling rather than a crown or root canal later.
If we do find something, we will show you exactly what we are seeing and explain the options in plain language. Depending on what the exam turns up, follow-up care at our office may involve dental fillings, composite bonding, crowns, sealants, molar root canal therapy, a simple extraction, or oral surgery. For nervous patients, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and local and topical anesthesia. We also keep room for emergency dental appointments, so a knocked-out tooth on a Saturday soccer field or a sudden toothache does not have to wait for a routine opening. Families who play contact sports often leave with a plan for custom sports mouth guards as well.
What Families Should Know Before the Visit
Bring a list of any medications, any medical conditions or sensitivities we should know about, and your insurance information. It helps to tell your child the appointment is a "tooth count" rather than promising nothing will happen — kids do best when the visit matches what they expected. If your child has had a hard time at a dental office before, tell us in advance so we can slow the visit down.
Here is what a routine exam appointment generally includes:
- A visual and hands-on check of every tooth, plus the gums, tongue, cheeks, and palate
- A look at bite alignment and how permanent teeth are coming in
- Cavity detection and a discussion of any spots we are watching
- A cleaning with our hygienist, with fluoride or sealants when indicated
- Home care coaching tailored to your child's age, diet, and brushing habits
- A clear plan for any treatment needed, and when to come back
Afterward, and What Results Look Like
There is no recovery time from an exam itself. Your child can eat, drink, and head back to school right away, though we may suggest waiting a short while after a fluoride application. What you take home is a clear picture of your child's oral health and a specific, age-appropriate plan — which teeth to watch, which brushing technique to work on, and which habits are helping or hurting.
Consistent exams build on each other. Over time we get to know your child's growth pattern, cavity risk, and personality, which lets us spot changes early and refer thoughtfully when specialty care is the right call. We partner with Ashby Park Family Orthodontics and Coastal Family Oral Surgery & Sedation, and we have a board-certified oral surgeon on staff who accepts patients without a referral.
Paying for Your Child's Exam
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and Medicaid, and we file pediatric, oral surgery, and anesthesia claims as a specialist. Self-pay families are welcome too, and we offer a $99 New Patient Special.
For treatment beyond a routine visit, we offer flexible financing plans and accept HSA and FSA funds. Our team will go over what your plan covers before treatment begins so there are no surprises.
