Sedation dentistry means using medication to help a child stay calm and comfortable during dental treatment. In our practice, that takes two forms: nitrous oxide (often called laughing gas) and oral sedation. Both are used alongside local and topical anesthesia, which numbs the specific tooth and gum tissue being treated. Sedation manages anxiety and restlessness; the numbing medicine manages sensation. They work together.
Nitrous oxide is the lighter of the two. A small, soft mask rests over the nose, and your child breathes a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Most children feel relaxed, a little floaty, and still fully aware of what's happening. It wears off within minutes of the mask coming off, so kids can usually return to school or normal activities the same day. Oral sedation is medication given by mouth before treatment begins. It produces a deeper level of relaxation and is a better match for children with stronger anxiety, longer or more involved treatment plans, or difficulty sitting for care. Drowsiness from oral sedation lingers longer, so the rest of that day is meant for rest at home.
We suggest sedation when it makes treatment better — not as a default. Because our practice is exclusively pediatric and we have a board-certified pediatric dentist on staff, we spend time first on the simpler tools: showing instruments, explaining each step in words a child understands, and keeping parents welcome in the treatment room. Oral sedation requires more planning. We'll give you specific instructions ahead of time, including guidance on eating and drinking before the appointment and what to bring. The medication is given in the office, and we allow time for it to take effect before treatment begins. Your child is monitored the entire time. Afterward, plan on a quiet day — no school, no sports, no bike riding. Grogginess and unsteadiness are normal for several hours, so children need close adult supervision until they're fully back to themselves. We'll send you home with written aftercare instructions covering eating, drinking, and what to watch for, plus a number to call with questions.
