Every tooth has a soft inner core made up of nerve tissue and blood vessels. It's protected by hard enamel and dentin, but when a cavity goes untreated, or a fall on a playground or ball field cracks a tooth, bacteria can reach that inner chamber. The result is inflammation and infection — and for a child, that usually shows up as a toothache that won't quit, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling of the gum near the tooth, or a tooth that suddenly hurts to bite on.
Root canal therapy treats the problem at its source. We remove the damaged tissue from inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the space, and seal it so bacteria can't move back in. What the Visit Is Like, and How We Keep It Comfortable
Comfort comes first. We use local and topical anesthesia so the tooth and surrounding area are fully numb before we begin. For kids who feel anxious — and plenty do — we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation, with dental anesthesiology among our in-house capabilities. We'll talk through the options with you ahead of time so there are no surprises.
Here's what a typical root canal appointment involves:
- Numbing the tooth completely and, if chosen, starting nitrous oxide or oral sedation
- Opening the top of the molar to reach the inner chamber
- Removing the infected or damaged tissue and cleaning the canal space
- Sealing the tooth to keep bacteria out
- Restoring the tooth, often with a crown, so it can stand up to daily chewing
Afterward, mild tenderness for a day or two is normal. We'll send you home with clear instructions: stick to softer foods at first, avoid chewing on that side until the tooth is fully restored, and keep brushing and flossing gently around the area. Call us if pain increases rather than fades — and if a problem flares up outside a scheduled visit, we offer emergency dental appointments.
