Emergency dentistry means treating dental problems that can't safely wait for a routine appointment. For children, adolescents, and teens, that usually falls into a few categories: injury, infection, and pain. Injuries include knocked-out or displaced teeth, chipped or fractured teeth, and cuts or bruises to the lips, gums, and tongue — common outcomes of falls, sports contact, bike spills, and playground tumbles. Infections show up as swelling, a bump on the gums, fever alongside a toothache, or persistent throbbing that doesn't ease with time. Pain can also come from a deep cavity, a lost or broken filling, a crown that has come off, or food wedged tightly between teeth.
Because we are an exclusively pediatric practice, everything about how we respond is built around children. We see patients from the first tooth or age one through young adulthood, and we care for children with special healthcare needs. Parents are welcome in the treatment room, which matters a great deal when a child is frightened and looking for a familiar face. A board-certified pediatric dentist is on staff, and we also have a general dentist, a dental hygienist, and — through our team — a board-certified oral surgeon, so a wide range of urgent problems can be addressed without sending you somewhere unfamiliar.
When you call about an emergency, the first step is understanding what happened and how urgent it is. A tooth that has been completely knocked out is time-sensitive; a small chip with no pain usually is not. Once your child is in the chair, we focus on getting comfortable before anything else. We examine the affected area, check surrounding teeth and soft tissue, and use cavity detection and clinical exam findings to understand whether the problem is limited to one tooth or part of something larger.
Comfort is central to emergency care, especially when a child is already upset. We offer local and topical anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and oral sedation, including anesthesia options for patients with dental anxiety. Which approach fits depends on your child's age, temperament, and what treatment is needed, and we talk it through with you first.
Treatment then depends on the diagnosis. Some common paths include:
- Composite bonding or a dental filling to repair a chipped or decayed tooth
- A crown when a tooth is too damaged for a filling alone
- Root canal therapy for a molar with deep infection or nerve involvement
- A simple extraction or oral surgery when a tooth can't be saved
- Fluoride treatment and preventive care to protect teeth after the immediate issue is resolved
Aftercare and What Comes Next
Most children feel noticeably better once the source of pain is addressed. We send you home with specific instructions — what to eat and avoid, how to manage soreness, how to keep the area clean, and what warning signs should prompt a call back to us. Soft foods for a day or two, gentle brushing near the treated area, and following any medication guidance we provide are typical starting points after treatment like a filling, extraction, or root canal.
We also look at why the emergency happened. If a sports injury was the cause, a custom sports mouth guard can help protect against a repeat. If decay was the underlying problem, we talk about sealants, fluoride, and home habits, because prevention and education are at the heart of how we practice. Insurance, Payment, and Getting Seen
Cost shouldn't delay care for a child in pain. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and Medicaid, and we file claims as a specialist for pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, and dental anesthesiology. Self-pay and cash patients are welcome.
For families who need it, we offer flexible financing plans and accept HSA and FSA funds. New patients can also take advantage of our $99 New Patient Special.
