A parent calls on a Tuesday afternoon because a baby molar cracked on a popsicle stick, or a six-year-old has a loose tooth that has been hanging on for weeks while the permanent tooth pushes in behind it. Sometimes it's a cavity that got too deep before anyone noticed, or an orthodontist who needs room made before braces go on. These are the everyday situations that bring families to us for a tooth extraction — and in nearly every one of them, the visit is far shorter and far calmer than parents expect.
We offer simple extraction, which means removing a tooth that has already come through the gums and can be lifted out without surgical cutting. The tooth is loosened gently with a dental instrument and then eased free. For children, simple extractions are the most common kind by a wide margin, because baby teeth have shorter, thinner roots that are often already resorbing on their own.
Before anything happens, we numb the area thoroughly with local and topical anesthesia, so your child feels pressure and movement but not pain. For kids who are nervous, we can add nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedation to help them stay relaxed and comfortable throughout. Parents are welcome in the treatment room with us, which for many children makes the biggest difference of all. We also treat children with special healthcare needs, and we adjust pacing, explanation, and sedation choices to fit each child.
Extractions come up for a handful of predictable reasons, and it helps to know which one applies to your child:
- A baby tooth with decay too extensive to restore with a filling or crown
- A stubborn baby tooth that won't fall out while the permanent tooth is already erupting
- A tooth damaged by trauma — a fall, a sports collision, a bike accident
- Crowding, where a tooth needs to be removed to make room for orthodontic treatment
- An infected tooth causing pain or swelling that needs urgent attention
Not every problem tooth needs to come out. We're a prevention-first practice, and our first question is always whether the tooth can be saved with a filling, a crown, or root canal therapy. We use cavity detection at every exam precisely so we can catch problems while they're still small and fixable. When removal really is the better path, we'll explain why in plain terms, show you what we're seeing, and answer your questions before we schedule anything.

For space and alignment questions that follow an extraction, we work alongside Ashby Park Family Orthodontics. You won't be left to figure out the next step on your own.
Aftercare and What Healing Looks Like
The first day matters most. Your child will bite on gauze for a while to let a clot form in the socket, and we'll ask you to keep them away from straws, spitting, and vigorous rinsing so that clot stays put. Soft foods — yogurt, applesauce, smoothies eaten with a spoon, scrambled eggs — make the first day or two easy. Cold foods often feel especially good.
While the numbness wears off, keep an eye on your child so they don't chew the inside of their cheek or lip; young kids sometimes do this without realizing it. Mild soreness is normal and usually settles quickly. Brushing continues as usual everywhere else in the mouth, with care around the site itself. We'll send you home with specific instructions and a number to call, and if anything seems off — bleeding that won't stop, growing swelling, pain that worsens instead of improving — we want to hear from you. We keep emergency dental appointments available for exactly that reason.
Insurance, Payment, and Getting Started
We accept all major PPO insurance plans and Medicaid, and because our pediatric dentist is board-certified, we file insurance claims as a specialist. Self-pay and cash patients are welcome too. You can use HSA or FSA funds toward treatment, and we offer flexible financing plans when a treatment plan is larger than what a single visit's budget allows.
If your family is new to us, our $99 New Patient Special is a straightforward way to get started. Our team will go over your coverage and estimated costs with you before treatment so there aren't surprises later.
