Most of the dental care a child needs is straightforward — a cleaning, a sealant, a filling. But every so often a tooth is too damaged to save, a baby tooth refuses to make way for the permanent one behind it, or an injury on the soccer field changes the plan entirely. In those moments, families want two things: a clear explanation of what needs to happen, and a team that knows how to keep a child calm while it happens. That is the space oral surgery fills in our offices in Easley and Greenville, and it is care we approach with the same gentleness we bring to a first visit at age one.
Oral surgery is a broad term for procedures that go beyond routine restorative dentistry and involve treating the teeth, gums, and supporting bone directly. For children, adolescents, and teens, the most common reason is a tooth that must come out — a simple extraction of a baby tooth that is badly decayed, fractured, or blocking the eruption of a permanent tooth. We also see teeth damaged by trauma, teeth that need to be removed to resolve infection and swelling, and situations where extraction is part of a larger orthodontic plan coordinated with our partners at Ashby Park Family Orthodontics.
Because we are an exclusively pediatric practice, every part of this process is built around young patients rather than adapted from adult care. We have a board-certified pediatric dentist on staff, and we work alongside a board-certified oral surgeon and our partners at Coastal Family Oral Surgery & Sedation so that more involved cases stay within a familiar network of care. We accept patients without a referral for oral and maxillofacial surgery, and we file insurance claims as a specialist. We also treat children with special healthcare needs, and parents are welcome in the treatment room — for many families, that single detail makes the difference between a tense appointment and a manageable one.
Before anything is scheduled, we examine the tooth and surrounding area and talk through the options. Sometimes a dental filling, crown, or root canal therapy on a molar can save a tooth that at first glance looked hopeless, and we would rather preserve natural structure whenever it is reasonable to do so. When removal truly is the better choice — for pain relief, to prevent infection from spreading, or to let the bite develop properly — we explain why in plain language, and we explain it to the child as well as the parent, in words they can actually understand.
Comfort planning is part of the conversation. We offer local and topical anesthesia so the area is thoroughly numb, and we have sedation options for children who need more support to get through treatment calmly. These include:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which helps a child relax and wears off quickly
- Oral sedation for longer or more involved appointments
- Local and topical anesthesia to numb the treatment area
- Anesthesia specifically suited to patients with dental anxiety, filed under our dental anesthesiology specialty
We talk through which option fits your child's age, temperament, health history, and the complexity of the procedure, and we answer questions until you feel settled about the plan.
Healing, Aftercare, and What Comes Next
Recovery from a childhood extraction is usually uncomplicated, but the first day matters. We send you home with specific instructions on managing the site, what foods to choose, how to handle any tenderness, and what signs warrant a call to us. Soft foods, rest, and careful attention to the area go a long way. If numbness from local anesthesia is still present, we ask parents to watch for lip or cheek biting until sensation returns.
We stay available afterward. We offer emergency dental appointments, so if something feels wrong over the weekend or after hours, you are not left guessing. Once healing is complete, we return to what we do most: prevention and education. That means regular exams and cleanings with our hygienist, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity detection, and sports mouth guards for athletes — all aimed at making the next surgical visit unnecessary.
Insurance, Financing, and Getting Started
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, Medicaid, and self-pay patients, and we file oral surgery claims as a specialist, which often helps with coverage. HSA and FSA funds are accepted, and flexible financing plans are available so that necessary treatment does not have to wait for the right month.
